The entire country is on alert for crippling blizzards, Arctic temperatures and snow to grind transport systems to a standstill and knock out power supplies.
Britain is on winter storm alert as sub zero temperatures hit.
The Met Office issued fresh warnings this morning of an “increased risk of disruption from snow” across London and the South of England on this evening as well as severe weather warnings for wind, ice and snow for huge parts of the rest of the UK.
Its experts have urged people to prepare for “significant disruption” triggered by ice, gales and lightning strikes.
Public Health England issued a level-2 cold weather alert warning of severe cold, heavy snow and icy conditions until Sunday.
The Met Office has today raised a near nationwide cold weather health warning from level-2 to a more serious level-3.
The “cold weather action” alert remains in place until Sunday with bitter conditions expected to grip the country into next week.
It states: “The weather will become increasingly cold and windy as polar air spreads south across the country, with widespread severe frosts and significant wind chill.
“This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services.”
