Further to the right?
WASHINGTON – After two marathon days questioning Brett Kavanaugh, senators were winding up his Supreme Court confirmation hearing Friday with legal experts making their cases for and against the judge who is likely to push the high court further to the right.
This assumes that the court is already to the right.
That’s hard to believe.
- Obama replaced Souter with Sotomayor: liberal for liberal.
- Obama replaced Stevens with Kagan: liberal for liberal.
- Trump replaced Scalia with Gorsuch: a staunch conservative with a conservative.
Then we have the rest of the court, which is pretty evenly split:
- Alito: conservative
- Roberts: conservative, but is also a swing vote (e.g., Obamacare!)
- Breyer: liberal
- Ginsburg: as liberal as you can get. She is more liberal than Scalia or Alito was/is conservative.
- Thomas: solid conservative
- Kennedy: swing
The AP article says that the court is currently conservative. Looks like four liberals and four conservatives. And no one can out liberal RBG.
