The public comment period for the federal government’s multimillion dollar review of possibly breaching the Four Lower Snake River Dams has been extended.  The agencies will now be taking comment until February 7th.  The initial deadline was January 17th.  A federal judge in Portland ordered the feds to consider dam removal to assist salmon recovery.  There will be another round of public comment once an Environmental Impact Statement is drafted.  The final document will then go back to the judge for review.  According to the NW Fishletter, the feds estimate it will cost around 40 million dollars to write a new EIS.  The agencies went through this same process about 15 years ago.  Even if the feds agreed to remove the dams and received approval from the judge it would still require an act of Congress.  The agencies expect to receive tens of thousands of written comments.  Thousands of people attended public scoping meetings held last fall around the Northwest.
