A rabid bat has been found in Latah County.
Idaho Public Health confirmed the rabid bat through positive lab results. Rabies is rare in humans but there are a few fatalities in the U.S. each year predominantly from rabid bat exposure. Dogs, cats, ferrets and horses should receive routine rabies shots.
If you find a wounded or dead bat don’t touch it with your bare hands. If anyone has an encounter with a bat they need to seek medical attention immediately and save the bat in a container without touching it and contact local public health officials. Public health is also reminding people to bat-proof their homes but plugging any holes in the siding.
No, that’s not a photo of the Latah County bat. That photo is from Australia, where they grow bats that are man-sized.
