Pullman’s “welcoming city” resolution passes

After much debate during the past month, Pullman is officially declared a “welcoming city” by city council.  The proposal, initially submitted by Councilmembers Nathan Weller and Ann Parks, emphasized the city’s diverse population and affirmation of rights for everyone. A clause regarding prohibiting the police from acting as federal immigration agents was removed prior to last night’s vote. Weller says contrary to what some believe, the proposal was never aimed at making Pullman a “sanctuary city” and the vote simply makes the welcoming status official.  Councilman Al Sorensen had expressed opposition to the proposal from the start. Sorensen says there was never any need to confirm what everyone already knew.  The vote in favor of the declaration was unanimous.
