Well said: 

19% of Hawaii’s students are in private school, as opposed to 16% ten years ago. Last number I saw said that 4% were homeschooled. Any worse indictment of the public school system when you are giving a product away and one quarter of the market won’t take it? I am hopeful the new superintendent can have an impact, but couldn’t name the basis of that hope.

The cost of a private- school education in Hawaii continues to climb as the state’s largest independent schools are charging on average 4.5 percent more in tuition for the upcoming school year, according to a Honolulu Star-Advertiser analysis, with most school officials citing the cost to retain good teachers as their biggest expense.
