OpEd: Age, cognition, power; questioning D.C.’s geriatric leadership

The following editorial ran in today’s Moscow-Pullman Daily News

I appreciate Ryan Uri’s editorial “Time for Democrats to Do Some Soul Searching.” Uri is the only liberal Daily News columnist willing to critique the Democrats and the DNC. The rest exhibit unwavering partisanship to anything emanating from the Biden Administration.

Uri points to Biden’s age of 81 as a significant liability. However, it’s not merely Biden’s age that is concerning, but the public instances of confusion and disorientation that suggest a decline in his cognitive faculties. His dementia-induced fog poses a significant risk in the Oval Office and to the American people.

The sight of Biden disoriented, always struggling to navigate a simple stage exit, begs a pressing question: who is truly at the helm of the Executive Branch? A world leader shuffling, tripping, and grappling with advanced senility yet vested with nuclear authority is a troubling situation that should concern everyone. Polling data indicates that voters prefer a rude-tweeting Trump in the White House than an addlebrained Biden.

The senility problem in DC isn’t unique to Biden, however. Politicians used to retire at the high point of their careers, but not anymore. Ruth Bader Ginsberg was in failing health for years. Instead of retiring when Obama could replace her, she chose to die in office, allowing Trump to replace her with Amy Comer Barrett.

Senator Dianne Feinstein Returns to Capitol in Wheelchair With Reduced Workload - BloombergSen. Diane Feinstein was in failing health after her bout with shingles, missing three months of Senate votes. Her presence was critical to the Democrat party. When reporters questioned about her three-month convalescing in California, she insisted that she had been present in D.C. and voting the entire time.

During a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, Feinstein was so confused she needed to be prompted to cast her vote. When it was her turn to vote on the Defense Appropriations bill, she remained silent until Washington Senator Patty Murray urged her to say “aye.” Feinstein then attempted to read a prepared statement before being interrupted by an aide. Murray again prompted her to just say “aye,” to which Feinstein eventually complied. On CSPAN, you can see her staff reminding her how and when to vote, even what to vote, apparently, and explaining proceedings during times when she became confused.

Such geriatric challenges appear across the political spectrum. Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, also 81-years-old, suffered two twenty-second brain freezes on national television. Republicans immediately went into damage control mode, reassuring everyone that he was fine.

Sen. Mitch McConnell Freezes Again During News ConferenceThe Democratic Party faces a challenging decision for the 2024 elections. They know that Biden cannot win a debate against anyone who can fog a mirror.

Last week, Biden called on a Reuter’s reporter for two questions. Biden read his responses to each question. Reuters claimed that the President didn’t know ahead of time what the questions were. It was just coincidence that the President had his responses printed out for him to read. Uh-huh.

In 2020, Democrats conveniently used the Covid scare to keep Biden locked up in his basement. I’m curious what they will cook up next year to keep him protected from the public eye.

Also in 2020, the Deep State intervened on Biden’s behalf by saying the revelations on the Hunter Biden laptop were Russian disinformation and telling social media companies to block all conversations about the laptop. If you want to look for 2020 election interference, look no further than the unelected administrative state’s lying propaganda to get what they want.

In an April 2022 Op-Ed, I predicted that the Democrats would have exited Biden by now. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Instead, a distracted party spends its time scrambling to maintain a failing façade, letting the nation’s resilience melt away while the outside world watches, plotting.

They had the perfect opportunity when Sen. Dianne Feinstein died. California Gov. Newsom could have nominated Vice President Kamala Harris to replace Feinstein. That would have given Newsom his DEI replacement as well as allowing Biden to replace Harris with another DEI fill, someone even the Democrats would prefer, like Michelle Obama. Then Biden could resign, leaving Michelle as President.

Or, after dumping Kamala, Biden could have chosen his heir apparent, Gavin Newsom, as Vice President. Not a DEI fill, but even a white guy is better than Kamala.

Everyone is watching in amusement, mostly apathetic at this point, to see what shenanigans the Democrats will pull in 2024 to ensure they keep the White House. They are tying up Trump with lawsuits to stop him from running. But Americans caught in the middle appear to prefer an embattled Trump as president rather than the ever-weakening alternative.
