Here’s an interesting story: the father wants to radicalize his son. The mom is asking the state for sole custody to prevent it.
In the first case of its kind, a New York mother is requesting sole custody of her children to prevent their father from radicalizing them, the New York Post reported.
Nabila Albargouthyand her husband Isam are divorcing after Isam began attending a conservative mosque and began making demands Nabila could not live with.
Now, Nabila says, “My deep concern is that he is radicalizing a beautiful, young, innocent mind; a fragile child.”
The petition to the court relates that one day at school, students said to her son that Jesus is God. The boy responded, “No — Allah is God and [Allah] is different because I would die for my God and they would not die for their God.”
After the boy made the remarks, his principal called the police, who got in touch with the Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Speaking to his mother, the boy also said that when he is older, he is “going to have a cabinet full of guns.”
Nabila and Isam are both immigrants from the Middle East and American citizens. “During most of our relationship, up until 2007, [Isam] was pleasant, open-minded and allowed me to be myself,” Nabila said in the court filing.
However after that time, Isam began demanding Nabila dress more modestly and stop exercising. He told his son that he should stop playing the saxophone and taking part in school plays, telling his son those activities were against their religion.
In addition, the petition says the father told his son, “We are different than Americans. We do not socialize with them.”
Although the couple has two children, an 11-year-old son and an 18-year-old daughter, the father has only seen his son since the two separated.
Although courts normally do not intervene in religious issues having to with the upbringing of children, Nabila’s lawyer said, “…if you make a showing that the religious upbringing is detrimental to the child’s well-being, they do intercede.”
