The IRS will fork over $3, 500, 000 and an apology after admitting it unfairly scrutinized Tea Party groups during the Obama Administration.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Thursday, that members of over 400 conservative groups reached a settlement.
The groups claimed their tax exempt status faced higher scrutiny in 2013 because of their political ideology.
Sessions confirmed groups with the words ‘tea party’ or ‘patriots’ were subject to inappropriate screening in their applications.
A senior attorney for judicial watch who helped uncover the scandal says it goes even deeper.
After the settlement announcement, Sessions said the heightened scrutiny was wrong, adding it is improper for the IRS to single out groups for different treatment based on their names or ideological positions.
