A Florida man who was was planning to bomb a synagogue on a Jewish holiday was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
James Medina, 40, who also goes by the name of James Muhammad, pleaded guilty to charges of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted religious hate crime.
Medina converted to Islam close to four years ago. After his arrest, he told investigators he wanted to make the attack look like it was committed by the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) and expressed his desire to become a martyr. He had recorded a video making threats and saying goodbye to his family and friends.
“I am a Muslim and I don’t like what is going on in this world. I’m going to handle business here in America. Aventura, watch your back. ISIS is in the house,” he reportedly said in the video.
Medina wasarrestedthrough an undercover operation by the South Florida Joint Terrorism Task Force. Authorities began watching him after noticing he was spouting anti-Semitic views. They subsequently picked up conversations he had about attacking the Aventura-Turnberry Jewish Center in Florida through a confidential source.
Medina expressed anti-Semitic views and reportedly studied the center to determine the most deadly way to attack it.
He was arrested April 29 approaching the synagogue while in possession of a bomb and pleaded guilty in August to the charges against him.
