Coldest Thanksgiving since President Theodore Roosevelt

The East Coast has not seen a Thanksgiving this cold in 117 years, since 1901.

The temperature this morning in Central Park plunged to 19F (-7.2C), the coldest since 1901, and tying Nov. 28, 1901 and Nov. 30, 1876 for the second coldest Thanksgiving in New York City history,

Today’s forecast high of 27 (-2.8)would be the coldest since Nov. 28, 1901 when the high temperature climbed to only 26 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, the coldest Thanksgiving Day on record hit New York City on Nov. 30, 1871 with a low of 15 and a high of 22.

In Worcester, MA, the temperature dropped to 7F (-13.9C) this morning, breaking the old record of 11F (-11.7C) set in 1987.

In Providence, RI the temperature dropped to 15F at TF Green Airport, breaking the previous record low for this date of 16F set in 1969 and again in 1987.

In Hartford, CT, the temperature dropped to 11F (-11.7C), breaking theold record of 14F set in 1969.

Even Long Island joined the record-breaking parade.

“The normal high for Islip is 51 degrees (10.6C),” said National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Pollina. “And just to put it into perspective, the normal low is 35 degrees (1.7C), so today’s high temperature won’t even reach the normal low.”

Today’s temperatures are “definitely not typical for November,” said Pollina. The 29-degree mark is usually seen only “in the heart of winter.”
