(AP) – Supporters of one long-shot bid to make California an independent nation ended their effort on Monday, while another group said it will launch a new campaign for a statewide vote next year.

Part of the problem with the #CalExit efforts involved a key organizer’s ties to Russia. 🙂

Yes California, a campaign that has generated headlines for months for trying to find a way to force California to secede from the United States, is technically based in San Diego, but the man who leads it lives in Russia. Now he says he’s staying there for good and ending his association with the movement.

One of the leaders of the group behind the “Calexit” proposal for California secession is making an exit of his own. Marcus Ruiz Evans, co-founder of Yes California, announced today that he is leaving the group in order to join a new organization that plans to take over the effort.
