Sonoma County residents are on high alert for the Kincade Fire — as well as burglars in disguise. Recent reports claimed individuals in the area are now disguising themselves as police and fire officials in an attempt to loot nearby homes.

“That’s the most terrible thing I’ve ever heard,” said one resident. “Normally, I’d trust a firefighter and security in a heartbeat – that’s just total fraud.”

The Kincade Fire continues to burn and has prompted thousands of residents to flee their homes. This has also opened the door to looters, who are seeking to take advantage of the tragedy.

The county sheriff’s office said they’re now looking into the possible crime as more reports continue to file in. Authorities also announced an additional 300 patrol deputies in areas where residents are under evacuation orders.

“We did get a report yesterday of possibly some fake firefighters out there wanting to do some looting,” stated Sheriff Shawn Murphy. “If you seem them, please report them to us – let’s get those guys out of here.”

Some alleged thieves are also believed to be posing as security guards to gain access to these areas as well. Authorities are encouraging residents to report any suspicious or concerning behavior.

Hard to report suspicious behavior when you have been evacuated from your home.
