So what does this mean for the fraternity and those who lived there and are under the cloud of suspicion?
An alleged rape that helped lead to the suspension of a Washington State University fraternity will not be pursued by the Whitman County Prosecutor’s Office. The case began in September of 2016 when a woman was reportedly raped in the basement of the Delta Upsilon house. That same weekend 3 other college aged women claimed that they had been drugged while drinking at the house. Within a week the Delta Upsilon house was suspended by WSU’s Interfraternity Council and its national organization.
Pullman Police Detectives conducted a lengthy investigation which was completed early this year. They believed that an 18 year old WSU student was raped in a basement rec room of the house during a party. Detectives found probable cause to support the claim that the woman was raped while she was passed out after being provided alcohol. Detectives asked prosecutors to charge a former house member with felony 2nd degree rape. The suspect was never arrested.
The Whitman County Prosecutor’s Office recently declined to pursue the charge citing insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. Pullman Detectives were also unable to find sufficient evidence to support the allegations that women were drugged at the Delta Upsilon house.
