Great news for the Palouse!
Whitman County is once again the Northwest’s top wheat producing county. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reports that Whitman County growers produced over 33 million bushels of winter wheat this year. The local yield came in at over 93 bushels an acre, up from 85 bushels an acre in 2017. Whitman County growers produced nearly 9 million bushels of spring wheat this year with a yield of 57 bushels an acre. The local spring wheat yield in Washington was also up this year from 45 bushels an acre in 2017. Latah County was the 3rd highest producer of spring wheat this year in Idaho with nearly 1.3 million bushels. The local yield on spring wheat in Idaho was over 81 bushels an acre, way up from the 2017 yield which was at 57 bushels an acre.
