Garfield County authorities in Pomeroy have received the criminal investigation regarding the alleged start of the massive Snake River Fire. Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers sent his investigation to the Garfield County Sheriff late last week. The blaze allegedly started August 2nd in Garfield County just across the Snake River from Granite Point in Whitman County. Deputies believe it was sparked by an abandoned campfire. Three college aged men reportedly admitted, voluntarily, that they burned a small fire the night before where the blaze erupted. The flames made an historic jump across the river torching a total of over 11,000 acres in both counties. The fire had to be state mobilized which brought in units from around Washington. Garfield County Sheriff Ben Keller says he will be sending the case to his Prosecutor Matt Newberg who will consider the case for a charging decision.
