In Switzerland, -36C was recorded in Glattape (1,850 meters altitude).
It is so cold that in Belgium, many cities are forcing homeless people to seek shelter.
In Ireland, which is expecting the most snowfall since 1982, residents rushed to the supermarket to buy food, but found many empty shelves in supermarkets.
In the UK, the Netherlands, the Balkans and Scandinavia, snow and cold caused problems in air and rail traffic.
Gas export record
Gazprom, the Russian gas group, said it has recorded an export record for six days in a row in Europe. The latest record was on Monday with 666.8 million cubic meters.
Hundreds of schools are closed in Britain after one of the coldest days for this time of year in three decades.
Many schools were also closed today in Ireland, northern Portugal, Bosnia and Kosovo, as well as Albania, where many villages and small towns were inaccessible.
