President Trump says the current immigration system is a failure, citing the recent New York City terrorist attacks as reasons for change.
In his weekly address Saturday, the president says the lack of proper vetting procedures in the current system is incompatible with national security.
He says the U.S. needs to replace the outdated chain migration and visa lottery system with a merit-based immigration system.
“Selecting new arrivals based on their ability to support themselves financially and to make positive contributions to U.S. society,” said President Trump. Base it on love of our country. We want people that come in that can love our country.”
President Trump says he is calling on Congress to pass a merit-based immigration system, adding it is a common sense plan which promotes assimilation, wage growth and safety.
