The surfacing of an early draft by former FBI Director James Comey shows he accused Hillary Clinton of being grossly negligent in handling classified information.
The latest memo was sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee over the weekend, and shows Comey applied a more lenient standard to Clinton.
Gross negligence in handling the nation’s intelligence can be punished criminally with prison time or fines.
The new language is much harsher than what Comey said about Clinton back in July of 2016 when he announced there would be no charges against the former secretary of state.
“Although we did not find clear evidence that Secretary Clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws governing the hailing of classified information…there is evidence that they were careless in their handling of very sensitive highly classified information,” Comey previously stated.
Comey’s’ decision not to seek criminal charges has been widely criticized since it was announced as legal experts question whether intent is necessary in pursuing criminal charges.
