I know this is two days late. I’m catching up on the news from a busy two days.
This has ramifications all through the EU and in the USA. Can California declare its independence from the USA (good riddance, by the way!)?
Catalonia’s parliament officially declares independence from Spain Friday, despite threatening orders from Madrid.
The motion was passed in the regional parliament in Barcelona, allowing Catalonia to be recognized as an independent and sovereign democratic state.
The motion also calls for other countries and institutions to recognize the region as separate from Spain.
The landmark ruling comes as Madrid was set to pass law which would allow Spain’s central government to reclaim control over the autonomous region.
While independence supporters celebrate the victory, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is calling for calm and vowing to restore the rule of law.
