Idaho Gov. Butch Otter issued this statement today on DACA:
“I appreciate the Attorney General’s recognition of the constitutional problems with the Obama administration’s executive action. I also support the Department of Homeland Security’s decision to phase out the DACA program in a way that will minimize the impact on current DACA beneficiaries. In the meantime, I call on Congress to redouble its efforts to restore the effectiveness of and public confidence in our nation’s immigration system.”
Idaho is one of 10 states that threatened in June to sue the federal government if DACA, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, wasn’t cut off; Otter was the only governor who joined 10 state attorneys general, including Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden, in signing a letter urging the Trump Administration to phase out the program. It has provided deportation relief and access to work permits to nearly 788,000 “Dreamers,” or undocumented immigrants who were brought into the country as young children.
