Despite the Pullman School Board’s decision to make collective bargaining compliant with the state’s open public meetings act, Tuesday’s meeting did restrict the freedom of the press. When we tried to record audio of the meeting the teachers union walked out in protest, saying they would not negotiate if the talks were recorded. School district staff asked that we not record the meeting and stated that their attorney would try to set up recording guidelines. We complied with the request and did not record Tuesday’s collective bargaining session, allowing the talks to begin.

In the end both sides did agree on what appeared to be a few minor items. The vague discussion indicates that the union is asking for about 15 items while the school district wants about 20 changes to the current contract. As to specifics of what is being negotiated, the only way the public will be able to decipher what’s going on is if someone happens to specifically explain an item through the normal discussion.

The Pullman School District and its teachers union will continue their contract talks next week. The public is still welcome to sit in the room. The union’s current deal runs out at the end of August.
