The INKster understands congratulations are in order for Joe Campbell, an associate professor of philosophy at Washington State University.
He earned the Marian E. Smith Faculty Award, the most prestigious award given for faculty teaching at WSU. According to a release, the $5,000 award recognizes unusually significant and meritorious achievement in teaching during the academic year, including successful and innovative performance in instruction.
As several of his friends have mentioned, “Joe is a vital and energetic Moscow community activist.” He is a board member of the Moscow Civic Association and organizer of the recent MCA public forums about Wal-Mart impacts, as well as an outspoken member of Vision 2020, an Internet chat site.

You don't see Vera congratulating other professors at WSU or UI.

Why Campbell? Well, he's a liberal who has thrown his hat in for the future Moscow City Council elections.

Washington State University's "professional philosopher" Joe Campbell writes:

Dale Courtney (who is apparently an idiot) has written some awful things about me on his blog (though he has never even met me). I am a philosopher and this is philosophy, nonetheless it might look bad if I continue to post with a WSU address...Please give me at least one reason to think that you are not an idiot.

I always find it amusing when professors have to result to name calling to try to get their point across. As soon as an "intellectual" resorts to ad hominem attacks (especially using his University email account), he has lost the high ground.

Readers, you can determine for yourself if what I wrote were awful things--unless quoting Campbell is an awful thing to do.

IS THE WAR IN IRAQ FAVORABLE OR DESTRUCTIVE TO HUMAN RIGHTS?
October 29, 2005, 5.30 p.m., Moscow High School Auditorium

The City of Moscow’s Human Rights Commission will be hosting a town forum to broaden awareness of the community’s relationship to the war in Iraq and to present a conversation addressing the war's positive and negative impact on human rights. A balanced panel of community members (moderated by WSU's Human Rights Director, Raul Sanchez) will address the question of whether the war in Iraq is favorable or destructive to human rights. This will be followed by participation on the part of the audience members, with opportunity to share their response to the topical question; a balanced community conversation is the key objective.

The forum will be held on Saturday, Oct 29 at 5:30pm in the Moscow High School auditorium.

Moscow Candidates Set Record Straight on 2020 Silence

Vera White writes the following in today's Moscow-Pullman Daily News:

If there is one thing politicians like to do, it’s to have their name on everyone’s lips. Moscow City Council candidates John Weber and Bill Lambert managed to do that by not responding to the recent Vision2020 candidate survey wherein six questions on contentious issues like the Palouse River Drive ball fields were asked.

The lack of response raised the ire of Bill London, who chaired the Candidate Questionnaire Committee. London e-mailed the INKster noting his displeasure and enclosing a Vision2020 posting by Bruce Livingston, who questioned what Weber and Lambert were trying to hide. Livingston noted he found the questions “reasonable and topical,” adding he had “been contemplating supporting one of them,” but had decided that “candidates who refuse to answer these reasonable questions do not deserve your vote.”
The INKster decided to jump into the fray and called Weber and Lambert for comments.
Lambert said he didn’t respond because he prefers to answer the Vision2020 questions in a live forum, noting several are scheduled before the election.
“It’s better where you have all the candidates together and anyone from the public that would like to attend,” Lambert said. “Interested people will be there because these debates will be well advertised.”
Weber had a more simple, albeit embarrassing, explanation.
“Even though I’m 58 years old, I haven’t come up to the electronic age,” he admitted. “It just strains my mental processes to the limit. I would rather speak and interact with voters without a computer screen between us.”
In reply to London’s concern about how much extra it would cost Moscow taxpayers to have paper copies created just for Weber, the candidate said he’d be willing to take the necessary classes to bring him up to speed.

Of interest:

Why would Bill London get his panties in a wad over this? As if candidates owed him an answer? That's the height of arrogance.
Those who sent questions and participated in the survey edit process were Bruce Livingston, Kenton Bird, and Pam Palmer. Now there's a well balanced group to write questions. I would say that they adequately represent Venom2020's mindset. Donovan said it best: The committee consisted of people on the moderate left, center left, far left, and a fourth member from the far way left.
Bill Livingstone (of MCA fame) immediately jumped to the conclusion that if someone didn't answer a Bill London/Venom2020 leftist survey, that he/she was hiding something. That's a second height of arrogance -- as Vera's letter reveals.
Bill London, Keely Mix, Tom Hansen and Joe Campbell said publicly on Vision 2020 they would not support candidates that choose not to respond to questions from Moscow residents even if the questions were biased. This could be an embarassing flat-statement for them, given that some of the MCA sweetheart candidates have not responded to one very public survey (perhaps more public than the Venom2020 one).

Things are definitely heating up going in to the elections!

Assume the Impossible and Anything is Possible

Our local Intoleristas are having a frenzy that the Daily News has allowed NSA Librarian, Ed Iverson, a biweekly column in the Daily News.

"Professional Philosopher" (whatever that means) Joe Campbell writes the following in today's paper:

Iverson claims that “The source of moral authority is either the Christian scriptures (or something similar) or it is personal and individualistic.” There are (at least) two problems with this comment.
First, it is a false dilemma. The Scottish philosopher David Hume, for instance, held that morality was founded on human sentiment. This is neither scriptural nor individualistic, since human sentiment is something that we all share. There are other views, but Hume’s is particularly interesting in the context of Iverson’s column since it speaks to the connection between morality and “a mother’s grief” without resorting to relativism.
Second, the Divine Command Theory that Iverson endorses – which lies behind the alleged moral authority of Christian scripture – is problematic for exactly the same reason that relativism is problematic. In fact, the former leads to the latter. If moral truth is founded on the mere word of God, then it can change — for an all-powerful God can change his words. If God came up with a new scripture making abortion moral, then Iverson would have to admit that it was so even though he now thinks that it is immoral. If Iverson claims that God would never do that, then he is relying on something more than God’s mere words.

First, if there is something that we all share and have in common, does that mean it cannot be individualistic as well? Talk about a false dichotomy!

Second, Campbell forgets (or doesn't know) that the Scriptures say "I, the Lord, do not change" (Mal 3:6; Heb 6:18; etc). While it may be nice for this "professional philosopher" to postulate the impossible and then argue that something can come forth from that, I'm not buying it.
