Financial Illiteracy

You’ve got to love the irony of this one: the federal government wants to teach government school children how to be fiscally responsible.

What are they going to teach them: to max out their credit cards as fast as they can, and then to counterfeit their way out of debt?

From Cato-at Liberty:

According to a story out yesterday, the federal government is starting a new campaign to promote financial literacy among high school students. That’s right, federal politicians, who have given us Fannie, Freddie, the Community Reinvestment Act, endless pork binges, and a national debt surpassing $12 trillion have the absolutely staggering hubris to think that they somehow have what it takes to teach your kids about sound financial practices!

This would actually be pretty funny (for instance, it reminds me of this classically trite PSA) were the complete unshackling of the federal leviathan of which it is a symptom not, potentially, utterly devastating. Unfortunately, we simply can’t afford, either literally or figuratively, to laugh at absurdities or patently unconstitutional overreaching like this anymore.

# re: Financial Illiteracy

They could take the 'do nothing' approach and just continue to just let most folks live paycheck to paycheck.  BTW, Fannie, Freddie, etc. have no relation to personal finance so that's a red herring.  A basic overview of savings / investments plus a clear explanation of time value of money could go a long way in getting some people to clean up their finances (or avoiding pitfalls altogether).  My only complaint about the financial courses I've taken in the past is the whole 'tax savings' strategies.  I'd rather focus on maximizing revenue.
