Global warming and the UI
The following letter to the editor appeared in today’s Moscow-Pullman Daily News:
I have a couple of questions for Al Poplawsky:
-
If "global warming" is caused by humans, why is there "global warming" on Mars? (To paraphrase, "It's the sun, stupid")
-
Michael Jarraud, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization said last night that the whole world was warming up .... except the U.S. and Canada. Yet the U.S. (at least) has been accused of being the primary source of "green house gases". So how do you explain this?
-
The major constituent of "green house gases" is water vapor, most of which comes from the oceans. How can human activity possibly add a significant amount to this?
-
Why do proponents of "Anthropogenic Global Warming" ignore the Medieval Warm Period? Do I believe in Anthropogenic Global Warming? Absolutely not. Do I believe that the earth might be warming up? It very well might be. It has in the past. But, if it is, to repeat: "It's the sun, stupid", and there is absolutely nothing we can do about that, is there?
Lastly, I have worked at the UI for 28 years. It has become quite clear in the last few years that any scientist who wants to can obtain a grant by simply mentioning how his research can address "global warming." And if such a scientist doesn't mention "global warming," he more often than not does not get his grant, or the amount of money he does get is significantly reduced. Care to explain this?
