Happy Reformation Day

Happy Reformation Day!

490 years ago, Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the doors of a church in Wittenberg, protesting the Roman Catholic practice of selling indulgences.

That act sparked the fire of the Reformation.

Update: Here’s a copy of the missing page: http://right-mind.us/blogs/blog_0/archive/2007/11/01/55760.aspx

Attached is the Campaign Financial Disclosure Report for Linda Pall between the dates of 1 Oct and 22 Oct 2007.

File Attachment: Pall's October 2007 Campaign Financial Disclosure Report (288 KB)

I called the City of Moscow to report the fact that her report is actually missing the entire list of names of the people who contributed the $1,205 over the last three weeks.

The City told me that they would contact her political treasurer (Jim Pilcher) and let me know when the required reports were completed.

Pall's Missing Pages

I’ll be posting Linda Pall’s Financial Report next.

Of note: page 1 of her “Itemized Contributions” page says “see attached”.

But the City never received an attached page.

So her report is incomplete as of the end of 31 October 2007.

Whoops.

Hey, Big Spender

I have a copy of all of the City Council Candidates’ Campaign Financial Disclosure Reports.

I’ll post them shortly.

Of interest is how much money the candidates have received.

  • Aaron Ament: $9,475
  • Tom Lamar: $8,817
  • Walter Steed: $6,936
  • Wayne Krauss: $6,135
  • Dan Carscallen: $4,545
  • Linda Pall: $3,910
  • Evan Holmes: $1,992

Bill London accuses the GMA candidates of being the “big spending” group.

Seems like most of the money is being funneled to the liberal candidates.

If money is any indication, the libs have their bets set on Ament.

Heaven help us.

More on MRSA

An EMT instructor has provided the following information concerning MRSA.

Also, attached is the CDC MRSA Patient Info Sheet.pdf (206 KB) and the MRSA Schools cleaning.pdf (61 KB) procedures.

What is Staphylococcus aureus (staph)?

Staphylococcus aureus, often referred to simply as "staph," are bacteria commonly carried on the skin or in the nose of healthy people. Approximately 25% to 30% of the population is colonized (when bacteria are present, but not causing an infection) in the nose with staph bacteria. Sometimes, staph can cause an infection. Staph bacteria are one of the most common causes of skin infections in the United States. Most of these skin infections are minor (such as pimples and boils) and can be treated without antibiotics (also known as antimicrobials or antibacterials). However, staph bacteria also can cause serious infections (such as surgical wound infections, bloodstream infections, and pneumonia).

What is MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)?

Some staph bacteria are resistant to antibiotics. MRSA is a type of staph that is resistant to antibiotics called beta-lactams. Beta-lactam antibiotics include methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin. While 25% to 30% of the population is colonized with staph, approximately 1% is colonized with MRSA.

Who gets staph or MRSA infections?

Staph infections, including MRSA, occur most frequently among persons in hospitals and healthcare facilities (such as nursing homes and dialysis centers) who have weakened immune systems. These healthcare-associated staph infections include surgical wound infections, urinary tract infections, bloodstream infections, and pneumonia.

What is community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA)?

Staph and MRSA can also cause illness in persons outside of hospitals and healthcare facilities. MRSA infections that are acquired by persons who have not been recently (within the past year) hospitalized or had a medical procedure (such as dialysis, surgery, catheters) are know as CA-MRSA infections. Staph or MRSA infections in the community are usually manifested as skin infections, such as pimples and boils, and occur in otherwise healthy people.

How common are staph and MRSA infections?

Staph bacteria are one of the most common causes of skin infection in the United States and are a common cause of pneumonia, surgical wound infections, and bloodstream infections. The majority of MRSA infections occur among patients in hospitals or other healthcare settings; however, it is becoming more common in the community setting. Data from a prospective study in 2003, suggests that 12% of clinical MRSA infections are community-associated, but this varies by geographic region and population.

What does a staph or MRSA infection look like?

Staph bacteria, including MRSA, can cause skin infections that may look like a pimple or boil and can be red, swollen, painful, or have pus or other drainage. More serious infections may cause pneumonia, bloodstream infections, or surgical wound infections.

Are certain people at increased risk for community-associated staph or MRSA infections?

CDC has investigated clusters of CA-MRSA skin infections among athletes, military recruits, children, Pacific Islanders, Alaskan Natives, Native Americans, men who have sex with men, and prisoners.
Factors that have been associated with the spread of MRSA skin infections include: close skin-to-skin contact, openings in the skin such as cuts or abrasions, contaminated items and surfaces, crowded living conditions, and poor hygiene.

How can I prevent staph or MRSA skin infections?

Practice good hygiene:

  1. Keep your hands clean by washing thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  2. Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until healed.
  3. Avoid contact with other people’s wounds or bandages.
  4. Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or razors.

Are people who are positive for the human immune deficiency virus (HIV) at increased risk for MRSA? Should they be taking special precautions?

People with weakened immune systems, which include some patients with HIV infection, may be at risk for more severe illness if they get infected with MRSA. People with HIV should follow the same prevention measures as those without HIV to prevent staph infections, including practice good hygiene, cover wounds (e.g., cuts or abrasions) with clean dry bandages, avoid sharing personal items such as towels and razors, and contact their doctor if they think they have an infection.

Can I get a staph or MRSA infection at my health club?

In the outbreaks of MRSA, the environment has not played a significant role in the transmission of MRSA. MRSA is transmitted most frequently by direct skin-to-skin contact. You can protect yourself from infections by practicing good hygiene (e.g., keeping your hands clean by washing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand rub and showering after working out); covering any open skin area such as abrasions or cuts with a clean dry bandage; avoiding sharing personal items such as towels or razors; using a barrier (e.g., clothing or a towel) between your skin and shared equipment; and wiping surfaces of equipment before and after use.

What should I do if I think I have a staph or MRSA infection?

See your healthcare provider.

Are staph and MRSA infections treatable?

Yes. Most staph and MRSA infections are treatable with antibiotics. If you are given an antibiotic, take all of the doses, even if the infection is getting better, unless your doctor tells you to stop taking it. Do not share antibiotics with other people or save unfinished antibiotics to use at another time.

However, many staph skin infections may be treated by draining the abscess or boil and may not require antibiotics. Drainage of skin boils or abscesses should only be done by a healthcare provider.

If after visiting your healthcare provider the infection is not getting better after a few days, contact them again. If other people you know or live with get the same infection tell them to go to their healthcare provider.

Is it possible that my staph or MRSA skin infection will come back after it is cured?

Yes. It is possible to have a staph or MRSA skin infection come back (recur) after it is cured. To prevent this from happening, follow your healthcare provider’s directions while you have the infection, and follow the prevention steps after the infection is gone.

If I have a staph, or MRSA skin infection, what can I do to prevent others from getting infected?

You can prevent spreading staph or MRSA skin infections to others by following these steps:

  1. Cover your wound. Keep wounds that are draining or have pus covered with clean, dry bandages. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions on proper care of the wound. Pus from infected wounds can contain staph and MRSA, so keeping the infection covered will help prevent the spread to others. Bandages or tape can be discarded with the regular trash.
  2. Clean your hands. You, your family, and others in close contact should wash their hands frequently with soap and warm water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, especially after changing the bandage or touching the infected wound.
  3. Do not share personal items. Avoid sharing personal items such as towels, washcloths, razors, clothing, or uniforms that may have had contact with the infected wound or bandage. Wash sheets, towels, and clothes that become soiled with water and laundry detergent. Drying clothes in a hot dryer, rather than air-drying, also helps kill bacteria in clothes.
  4. Talk to your doctor. Tell any healthcare providers who treat you that you have or had a staph or MRSA skin infection.

What should I do if someone I know has a staph or MRSA infection?

If you know someone that has a staph or MRSA infection you should follow the prevention steps.

Press Release -- Parking Chalk Marks

Update: this came from the Moscow Police Department, not from the Latah County Sheriff’s Office.

Recently, it has come to the attention of the Moscow Police Department that some people may be wiping off the chalk marks on vehicle tires. These chalk marks are placed on vehicles by the Moscow Police Department Parking Enforcement Officers. The chalk marks help parking enforcement regulate the time a vehicle has been parked as stated in the Moscow City Code.

If anyone wipes off the chalk mark on a vehicle to avoid enforcement they may be charged with a misdemeanor under Idaho Code 18-2603, “Destruction, Alteration or Concealment of Evidence.”

Quote of the Day: Dr. Benjamin Spock

We have reared a generation of brats. Parents aren't firm enough with their children for fear of losing their love or incurring their resentment. This is a cruel deprivation that we professionals have imposed on mothers and fathers. Of course, we did it with the best of intentions. We didn't realize until it was too late how our know-it-all attitude was undermining the self assurance of parents.

—Dr. Benjamin Spock

Ooops. Sorry, all you parents who followed Spock’s parental advice.

Better luck with the grandkids.

Drug-resistant staph infections are in Lewiston-Clarkston Valley

This just hasn’t made the headlines that the MRSA outbreak in Spokane-Cd’A has made.

It’s on everyone’s radar these days because the number of cases of the “superbug” has increased so dramatically; and because of the health alert that was sent out; and because schools on the east coast have closed to do an entire disinfection.

I need to check with the physicians in Moscow-Pullman and see if we’ve seen any kind of increased occurrence of MRSA here.

The following article ran in today’s Lewiston Tribune.

Drug-resistant staph infections at hospitals and medical clinics in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley and surrounding areas are becoming a more common problem - but it's not a new problem, health officials say.

Medical personnel at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston may see anywhere from 20 to 70 patients per month showing up with methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, a kind of staph infection more difficult to treat than other staph infections.

Barb Boland, infection control practitioner at St. Joseph, said the valley has fewer cases than the national average.

"We have been watching (MRSA) for eight years," Boland said. "It is definitely becoming more and more prevalent in our valley - far more than it was eight years ago."

One of the biggest misconceptions about MRSA, Boland said, is everybody has got it and it is no big deal.

"Not everybody has it and it is a big deal; just ask anybody who has ever tested positive," she said. "It is definitely an organism that deserves respect. People need to be educated about it."

Mild infections can look like a red, swollen pimple or boil. They may be painful and loaded with pus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Serious infections may cause pneumonia, bloodstream infections, or surgical wound infections, the CDC states.

MRSA is resistant to methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin, according to the CDC.

Tenna Pennick, infection, prevention and control practitioner at Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston, said MRSA is increasing across the nation. She has seen a significant increase in the valley since 2000.

"MRSA is a growing concern because it is becoming more widespread," she said.

Numbers USA

RedchartNumbers USA has an interesting graph. They include the following comment:

The green section of the graphic is the future that millions of Americans began to create in the early 1970s when they decided -- on average -- to have families at replacement size (about two children per family).

But the red shows the extra population Congress added through above-replacement-level immigration.

You can see that if Congress had allowed immigration at replacement-level numbers since 1970 to match the American people's replacement-level fertility, we would be living much less congested lives today. U.S. population would never have risen as high as it already is today. We would have to be building schools, roads, houses and infrastructure at a far slower pace.

But the green on this graphic is a future that has been forever destroyed by Congress through its decisions to dramatically increase immigration numbers to force mass U.S. population growth at an unprecedented level.

It seems that Jeff Harkins and the conservative candidates continue to advocate an economic model that no longer works. Please give an example of a totally "Free" market that has survived over time and has not fallen victim to collusion, corruption or theft.

The world is rapidly changing. Clinging to obsolete ideas puts us further behind.

Ah, yes, that wonderful powerhouse of socialism. Well, at least she’s honest about her economic proclivities.

Of course, this is the same person who signed a business petition on behalf of AmericanWest Bank to keep Wal-Mart out of Moscow; and who signed a business petition on behalf of Gritman to keep Wal-Mart out of Moscow. And she’s a board member of the LEDC. Isn’t that nice?

Ralph Nader Sues Democratic Party

Here’s something absolutely hysterical: the king of product lawsuits sues the DNC.

Priceless!

TownHallFrom TownHall:

Consumer advocate and 2004 independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader sued the Democratic Party on Tuesday, contending officials conspired to keep him from taking votes away from nominee John Kerry.

Nader's lawsuit, filed in District of Columbia Superior Court, also named as co-defendants Kerry's campaign, the Service Employees International Union and several so-called 527 organizations such as America Coming Together, which were created to promote voter turnout on behalf of the Democratic ticket.

The lawsuit also alleges that the Democratic National Committee conspired to force Nader off the ballot in several states.

"The Democratic Party is going after anyone who presents a credible challenge to their monopoly over their perceived voters," Nader said in a statement. "This lawsuit was filed to help advance a free and open electoral process for all candidates and voters. Candidate rights and voter rights nourish each other for more voices, choices, and a more open and competitive democracy."

Among other things, the lawsuit alleges that the DNC tried to bankrupt Nader's campaign by suing to keep him off the ballot in 18 states. It also suggests the DNC sent Kerry supporters to crash a Nader petition drive in Portland, Ore., in June 2004, preventing him from collecting enough signatures to get on the ballot.

Yet More on Ament

One of my readers responds to the LMT article discussing Aaron Ament:

Isn't the key point from the LMT article that he basically admits he's out to get you? That his votes on Christ Church and NSA issues are based on his negative feelings towards them? That he's trying to drive them out of town because he doesn't like them? That it's not really a zoning issue, it's not really about parking?

University of Delaware Requires Students to Undergo Ideological Reeducation

A FIRE press release.

The University of Delaware subjects students in its residence halls to a shocking program of ideological reeducation that is referred to in the university’s own materials as a “treatment” for students’ incorrect attitudes and beliefs. The Orwellian program requires the approximately 7,000 students in Delaware’s residence halls to adopt highly specific university-approved views on issues ranging from politics to race, sexuality, sociology, moral philosophy, and environmentalism. The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is calling for the total dismantling of the program, which is a flagrant violation of students’ rights to freedom of conscience and freedom from compelled speech.

Reeducation compounds. Brilliant.

Breaking News: Yet Three More Cases of MRSA

KREMFrom KREM News in Spokane:

KREM 2 News has confirmed three more cases of MRSA, a drug-resistant strain of staph, in Post Falls schools. Two of the students attend Post Falls High School; the third attends Post Falls Middle School.

Recall what the Cd’A school said:

"I asked them yesterday what precautions [they] are taking this week to clean the school," said [the mother]. "Twenty-one other schools across the nation have already closed down to get in there and clean. Why aren't [they] doing that?"

The Coeur d'Alene School District maintains there's no reason yet to close the school.

"Something like the chickenpox can be deadly, and the flu can be deadly, but most of the time it's not," said Randi Lustig, a registered nurse with the Panhandle Health District. "Most of the time MRSA's not either."

School administrators told us they planned to spend the weekend disinfecting the building.

Sounds like MRSA is spreading like the chickenpox in Cd’A and Spokane.

Breaking News: Environmental groups file notice of intent to sue over Palouse earthworm

The following is from the online edition of the Lewiston Tribune.

A coalition of environmental groups and concerned citizens filed today a 60-day notice of intent to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the agency’s refusal to study the rare giant Palouse earthworm and its worthiness for protection under the Endangered Species Act.

The legal action was taken by the Center for Biological Diversity, Friends of the Clearwater, Palouse Prairie Foundation, Palouse Audubon, Steve Paulson of Orofino and Lynne Nelson of Palouse after the agency rejected their plea to conduct a status review of the lily-smelling worm that can grow up to 3 feet long and spit at attackers. The worm was described as common on the Palouse around the turn of the 20th century. But it has only been seen a handful of times in the last 100 years.

It’s all about stopping development. If Highway 95 weren’t trying to be straightened, or a ring-road considered, no one would care about the earthworm.

Just imagine the consequences to the Palouse if a non-existent worm were declared “endangered”. No digging of any sort would be legal for fear of hurting one of these animals.

I encourage you to reread Mike Costello’s recent post about what’s really the agenda behind saving the worm.

For my younger readers, Google up snail darter and see what happened back in the mid-70’s. The snail darter was a

previously unknown and inconsequential species of perch that was discovered in the Little Tennessee River and exploited by environmentalists who sought to prevent construction of the Tellico Dam. The dam’s construction was held up until the US Congress granted the Tennessee Valley Authority an exemption from the Endangered Species Act in 1980.

Different century; same play from the environmentalists play book.

Judge Denies Goose Creek Megahed Bail

More about the alleged terrorists in Goose Creek, SC (my former stomping grounds when I was stationed twice in Charleston).

“Guns, explosives, fuses, canisters of gasoline, ammunition, welding equipment, GPS devices, all-night interstate drives to an unstated and indeterminate destination, stops to check gun prices and availability, and computers with a recent history of visits to sites that feature the advocates and the means of violence are not attributes that a disinterested but cautious observer associates with a safe and tranquil citizen of the community,”

The Left and the Term "Islamo-Fascism"

TownHallOver at TownHall, Dennis Prager has a great article where he discusses his experience on campuses during the “Islamo-Fascist Awareness Week”.

He discusses that the term “Islamo-Fascist” is a valid term, and he gives the following reasons why:

Regarding the term "Islamo-Fascism," most students heard the arguments I presented for the legitimacy of the term for the first time in their lives. Very briefly summarized, these arguments were:

First, the term is not anti-Muslim. One may object to the term on factual grounds, i.e., one may claim that there are no fascistic behaviors among people acting in the name of Islam -- but such a claim is a denial of the obvious.

So once one acknowledges the obvious, that there is fascistic behavior among a core of Muslims -- specifically, a cult of violence and the wanton use of physical force to impose an ideology on others -- the term "Islamo-Fascism" is entirely appropriate.

Second, the question then arises as to whether that term is anti-Muslim in that it besmirches the name of Islam and attempts to describe all Muslims as fascist. This objection, too, has a clear response.

The term no more implies all Muslims or Islam is fascistic than the term "German fascism" implied all Germans were fascists or "Italian fascism" or "Japanese fascism" implied that all Italians or all Japanese were fascists. Indeed, even religious groups have been labeled as fascist. During World War II, for example, Croatian Catholic fascists were called Catholic Fascists, and no one argued that the term was invalid because it purportedly labeled all Catholics or Catholicism fascist. When the left uses the term "American imperialism," are they implying that all Americans are imperialists? Then why does Islamo-Fascism label all Muslims?

Third, given the horrors being perpetrated by some Muslims in the name of Islam -- from the genocide currently being practiced by the Islamic Republic of Sudan, to the mass murders of innocents in Iraq, Israel, America, Britain, Bali, Thailand, the Philippines and elsewhere -- what term is more accurate than "Islamo-Fascism"? "Islamic totalitarianism"? "Jihadists"? "Bad Muslims"?

Prager finishes by telling how the left has a history of not confronting real evil, but just those they disagree with.

The left's organized crusade against Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week was simply the latest shame in the long and shameful history of the left's inability to confront those engaged in great evil -- like the left's ferocious opposition during the Cold War to labeling communism as "totalitarian" or "evil" and its nearly universal condemnation of President Ronald Reagan's description of the Soviet Union as an "evil empire."

That Muslim student groups and other Muslim organizations joined with the left in the ad hominem condemnation of Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week was most unfortunate. Many Muslims know well that there is indeed such a thing as Islamo-Fascism, and they should be the first to join in fighting it. It is not those who use the term "Islamo-Fascism" who are sullying the name of Islam; it is the Islamo-Fascists.

Global Stock Market Capitalization Sets New Record

MarkJ.PerryMark J. Perry is a professor of economics and finance in the School of Management at the Flint campus of the University of Michigan. Perry holds two graduate degrees in economics (M.A. and Ph.D.) from George Mason University in Washington, D.C.

Mark has an excellent economics blogsite: Carpe Diem.

This is cross-posted from his site.

[M]ore global wealth (measured by stock market value) was created in the last 5 years ($40 trillion total, or almost $6,000 for every person on the planet) than was created during the thousands of years it took to create the first $35 trillion of stock market value, a level reached in 2000.

Not a bad record for globalization and the significant amount of wealth created in its wake.
Truly amazing.

Islam Goodness Awareness Week

World Magazine has an article about some Muslims during WWII who saved the lives of Jews during the Holocaust.

Conservative commentator David Horowitz declared last week Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week. According to Princeton University’s Daily Princetonian, Horowitz linked Islamists and Nazis in a recent speech: “Jew hating is not only rampant, but has become a religion in the Muslim world ever since the Nazis made a pact with radical Islamists.

A new display at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum in Jerusalem proves that in World War II, however, some Muslims practiced Islam by saving the lives of endangered Jews. According to the Jerusalem Post, the display recognizes Albanian Muslims who refused to betray Jews during the Nazi occupation of Albania.

Before World War II, 200 Jews lived within Albanian borders. Jews fled to Albania as the Third Reich rose and when the Nazis occupied Albania in 1943, they demanded lists of the Jews who lived there. Albanian Muslims refused to comply, and the Jewish population in Albania survived and even grew.

The reason Albanians helped: an Albanian code of honor called Besa, translated “to keep the promise.” Exhibition curator Yehudit Shendar said, “Many, if not all, were heavily influenced in their choice by Islam.” The son of a man who saved Jews asked, “Why did my father save a stranger at the risk of his life and the entire village? My father was a devout Muslim. He believed that to save one life is to enter paradise.”

Norman Gershman took the photographs that comprise the display. He spoke with some of the 63 Albanians who received Yad Vashem’s “Righteous Among the Nations” award and said, “What I found were good people who did good deeds.” Many said the Koran motivated them, and the Muslim culture’s ideal of hospitality. Gershman said, “This is a story that [shows] there are good Muslims in the world.”

Which again goes to show that the fight should be against what Horowitz calls Islamo-Fascism.

Blog critics force imam to resign from Ohio mosque

From the Associated Press:

PARMA, Ohio—An imam who was to become the new spiritual leader of Ohio’s largest mosque resigned because of allegations by bloggers that he is anti-Semitic, he said.

Alzaree, 38, an Egyptian-born cleric, was to be the mosque’s first permanent imam since Fawaz Damra, who was deported in January after a 1991 videotape surfaced showing him disparaging Jews and raising money for the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad.

Damra apologized and said his views had changed but was shunned by the interfaith leaders who once worked with him.

Alzaree, who previously led a mosque in Omaha, Neb., said bloggers such as Central Ohioans Against Terrorism and Jihad Watch continued to attack him for a 2003 sermon in which he referenced the Hadiths, a collection of Prophet Muhammad’s sayings.

“The hour of judgment shall not happen until the Muslims fight the Jews,” the sermon quotes a Hadith. “The Muslims shall kill the Jews to the point that the Jew shall hide behind a big rock or a tree.”

Alzaree has said the sermon gave many examples of Islamic teaching on the Day of Judgment and that it is clear that Muslims in the present are required to “strive and struggle in the world doing the good.”

Bloggers also attacked him for an appearance at the Omaha mosque by Wagdy Ghoneim, an Egyptian and former imam at the Islamic Institute of Orange County in California who was forced to leave the United States in 2005 because of immigration violations.

Ghoneim had come to the attention of the U.S. Homeland Security Department, which believed his speeches could be considered supportive of terrorist organizations.
