Chart of the Day I (above) shows the monthly black jobless rate back to January 1972 when the BLS first started tracking and reporting that monthly series. Over the last nearly half-century, the black jobless rate has averaged 12%, it was as high as 20.9% in December 1982, and above 20% for eight months between October 1982 and June 1983. In April of this year, the black unemployment rate fell to 6.6%, the lowest rate ever in the history of this series.
