Benewah County’s high turnout swings Senate race

Back in 2012, Benewah County and Latah County were redistricted together.

This has thrown Moscow liberals for a loop. They used to have control of everything going on in Latah County. Now, with balance from the rural areas of Latah county and of Benewah county, they can’t wag the dog any more.

From the Daily News

Nearly a third of the registered voters in Latah County cast a ballot in Tuesday’s primary – the highest turnout for the county since 1994, when 40 percent lined up at the polls.
In total, 6,285 of the 21,434 registered voters, or 29.3 percent, turned out. To the north, Benewah County had a turnout of 34.5 percent, with 1,726 of the county’s 4,999 registered voters heading to the polls.

A higher turnout in Latah County may have been enough to push 5th District Senate candidate Marshall Comstock, R-Moscow, over incumbent Sen. Dan Foreman, R-Viola.

Comstock lost the race by a total of 109 votes. In Latah County, however, the former Moscow mayor had a 468-vote advantage. In Benewah, the advantage went to Foreman, who took 78.5 percent of the vote and won by a 577-vote margin.

…

In the 2016 primary, only 21.7 percent of registered voters in Latah County voted. In Benewah, 18 percent turned out. In 2014, Latah County saw 16.8 percent head to the polls, and Benewah County had 22.9 percent.
